Islam in daily life

Lesson 2 of 4

What does Islam say about parents?

From the Quran

And your Lord has decreed that you worship not except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [so much as], "uff," and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

Al-Isra 17:23-24Read in the Quran

And We have enjoined upon man [care] for his parents. His mother carried him, [increasing her] in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the [final] destination.

Luqman 31:14Read in the Quran

From the Sunnah

Bahz ibn Hakīm reported from his father from his grandfather that he said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, to whom should I be dutiful? he said: "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father, then the next in nearness and so on."

Narrated by Abu Dāwūd, At-Tirmidhi, and Ahmad Hasan HadeethEnc.com
Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) clarified that the person most deserving of dutifulness, kindness, good treatment, pleasant companionship, and maintenance of ties with is the mother. He emphasized the mother’s right over others by repeating it three times to highlight her superiority over all people without exception. Then he (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said, clarifying who comes next to her in terms of dutifulness: Then the father, then the next in nearness and so on from among the relatives, and the closer they are, the more deserving they are of maintaining ties than those who are farther away.
