Sa'ala sā'ilu bi'adhābin wāqi'
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen1748
Llil-kāfirīna laysa lahū dāfi'
To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer.
Mminallāhi dhil-ma'ārij
[It is] from Allāh, owner of the ways of ascent.
Ta'rujul-malā'ikatu war-rūhu ilayhi fī yawmin kāna miqdāruhū khamsīna alfa sanah
The angels and the Spirit [i.e., Gabriel] will ascend to Him during a Day the extent of which is fifty thousand years.
Fasbir sabran jamīlā
So be patient with gracious patience.
Innahum yarawnahū ba'īdā
Indeed, they see it [as] distant,
Wanarāhu qarībā
But We see it [as] near.
Yawma takūnus-samā'u kal-muhl
On the Day the sky will be like murky oil,1749
Watakūnul-jibālu kal-'ihn
And the mountains will be like wool,1750
Walā yas'alu hamīmun hamīmā
And no friend will ask [anything of] a friend,
Yubassarūnahum yawaddul-mujrimu law yaftadī min 'adhābi yawmi'idhi bibanīh
They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children
Wasāhibatihī wa akhīh
And his wife and his brother
Wafasīlatihil-latī tu'wīh
And his nearest kindred who shelter him
Waman fil-ardi jamī'an thumma yunjīh
And whoever is on earth entirely [so] then it could save him.
Kallā innahā lazā
No!1751 Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell],
Nazzā'atal lish-shawā
A remover of exteriors.1752
Tad'ū man adbara watawallā
It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience]
Wajama'a fa aw'ā
And collected [wealth] and hoarded.
Innal-insāna khuliqa halū'ā
Indeed, mankind was created anxious:
Idhā massahush-sharru jazū'ā
When evil touches him, impatient,
Wa idhā massahul-khayru manū'ā
And when good touches him, withholding [of it],
Illal-musallīn
Except the observers of prayer -
Alladhīna hum 'alā salātihim dā'imūn
Those who are constant in their prayer
Walladhīna fī amwālihim haqqum ma'lūm
And those within whose wealth is a known right1753
Llis-sā'ili wal-mahrūm
For the petitioner and the deprived -
Walladhīna yusaddiqūna biyawmid-dīn
And those who believe in the Day of Recompense
Walladhīna hum min 'adhābi rabbihim mushfiqūn
And those who are fearful of the punishment of their Lord -
Inna 'adhāba rabbihim ghayru ma'mūn
Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe -
Walladhīna hum lifurūjihim hāfizūn
And those who guard their private parts
Illā 'alā azwājihim aw mā malakat aymānuhum fa innahum ghayru malūmīn
Except from their wives or those their right hands possess,1754 for indeed, they are not to be blamed -
Famanibtaghā warā'a dhālika fa ulā'ika humul-'ādūn
But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors -
Walladhīna hum li amānātihim wa'ahdihim rā'ūn
And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive
Walladhīna hum bishahādātihim qā'imūn
And those who are in their testimonies upright
Walladhīna hum 'alā salātihim yuhāfizūn
And those who [carefully] maintain their prayer:
Ulā'ika fī jannātim mukramūn
They will be in gardens,1755 honored.
Famālil-ladhīna kafarū qibalaka muhti'īn
So what is [the matter] with those who disbelieve, hastening [from] before you, [O Muḥammad],
'Anil-yamīni wa'anish-shimāli 'izīn
[To sit] on [your] right and [your] left in separate groups?1756
Ayatma'u kullumriy'im minhum an yudkhala jannata na'īm
Does every person among them aspire to enter a garden of pleasure?
Kallā innā khalaqnāhum mimmā ya'lamūn
No! Indeed, We have created them from that which they know.1757
Falā uqsimu birabbil-mashāriqi wal-maghāribi innā laqādirūn
So I swear by the Lord of [all] risings and settings1758 that indeed We are able
'Alā an nubaddila khayram minhum wamā nahnu bimasbūqīn
To replace them with better than them; and We are not to be outdone.
Fadharhum yakhūdū wayal'abū hattā yulāqū yawmahumul-ladhī yū'adūn
So leave them to converse vainly and amuse themselves until they meet their Day which they are promised -
Yawma yakhrujūna minal-ajdāthi sirā'an ka annahum ilā nusubin yūfidūn
The Day they will emerge from the graves rapidly as if they were, toward an erected idol, hastening.1759
Khāshi'atan absāruhum tarhaquhum dhillatun dhālikal-yawmul-ladhī kānū yū'adūn
Their eyes humbled, humiliation will cover them. That is the Day which they had been promised.
