How the Qibla is calculated

The Qibla follows the shortest path over the globe (a great circle) from you to the Kaaba at 21.4225° N, 39.8262° E. That is why it can look different from a straight line on a flat map.

A phone compass shows magnetic north, which can differ from true north by a few degrees depending on where you are. Calibrate it by moving your phone in a figure eight.

What is the Qibla?

The Qibla is the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah, which Muslims face in prayer.

How do I find the Qibla with my phone?

Open this page on your phone, allow location, tap "Start the compass", hold the phone flat and turn until the Kaaba points straight up.

Why is the Qibla from America to the north east?

Because the shortest path over the globe from North America to Makkah goes north east, even though Makkah looks south east on a flat map.
