Al-hāqqah
The Inevitable Reality -
Mal-hāqqah
What is the Inevitable Reality?
Wamā adrāka mal-hāqqah
And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?
Kaddhabat thamūdu wa'ādu bil-qāri'ah
Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity [i.e., the Resurrection].
Fa ammā thamūdu fa uhlikū bit-tāghiyah
So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering [blast].
Wa ammā 'ādun fa uhlikū birīhin sarsarin 'ātiyah
And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming,1737 violent wind
Sakkharahā 'alayhim sab'a layālin wathamāniyata ayyāmin husūman fataral-qawma fīhā sar'ā ka annahum a'jāzu nakhlin khāwiyah
Which He [i.e., Allāh] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.
Fahal tarā lahum mim bāqiyah
Then do you see of them any remains?
Wajā'a fir'awnu waman qablahū wal-mu'tafikātu bil-khāti'ah
And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities1738 with sin.
Fa'asaw rasūla rabbihim fa akhadhahum akhdhatar rābiyah
And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding [in severity].
Innā lammā taghal-mā'u hamalnākum fil-jāriyah
Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you [i.e., your ancestors] in the sailing ship1739
Linaj'alahā lakum tadhkiratan wata'iyahā udhunun wā'iyah
That We might make it for you a reminder and [that] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.
Fa idhā nufikha fis-sūri nafkhatun wāhidah
Then when the Horn is blown with one blast
Wahumilatil-ardu wal-jibālu fadukkatā dakkatan wāhidah
And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow [i.e., stroke] -
Fayawma'idhin waqa'atil-wāqi'ah
Then on that Day, the Occurrence [i.e., Resurrection] will occur,
Wanshaqqatis-samā'u fahiya yawma'idhin wāhiyah
And the heaven will split [open], for that Day it is infirm.1740
Wal-malaku 'alā arjā'ihā wayahmilu 'arsha rabbika fawqahum yawma'idhin thamāniyah
And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight [of them].
Yawma'idhin tu'radūna lā takhfā minkum khāfiyah
That Day, you will be exhibited [for judgement]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.1741
Fa ammā man ūtiya kitābahū biyamīnihī fayaqūlu hā'umuqra'ū kitābiyah
So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!
Innī zanantu annī mulāqin hisābiyah
Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."
Fahuwa fī 'īshatir rādiyah
So he will be in a pleasant life -
Fī jannatin 'āliyah
In an elevated garden,
Qutūfuhā dāniyah
Its [fruit] to be picked hanging near.
Kulū washrabū hanī'ā bimā aslaftum fil-ayyāmil-khāliyah
[They will be told], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth1742 in the days past."
Wa ammā man ūtiya kitābahū bishimālihī fayaqūlu yālaytanī lam ūta kitābiyah
But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record
Walam adri mā hisābiyah
And had not known what is my account.
Yālaytahā kānatil-qādiyah
I wish it [i.e., my death] had been the decisive one.1743
Mā aghnā 'annī māliyah
My wealth has not availed me.
Halaka 'annī sultāniyah
Gone from me is my authority."1744
Khudhūhu faghullūh
[Allāh will say], "Seize him and shackle him.
Thummal-jahīma sallūh
Then into Hellfire drive him.
Thumma fī silsilatin dhar'uhā sab'ūna dhirā'an faslukūh
Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."
Innahū kāna lā yu'minu billāhil-'azīm
Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,
Walā yahuddu 'alā ta'āmil-miskīn
Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.
Falaysa lahul-yawma hāhunā hamīm
So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend
Walā ta'āmun illā min ghislīn
Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;
Llā ya'kuluhū illal-khāti'ūn
None will eat it except the sinners.
Falā uqsimu bimā tubsirūn
So I swear by what you see
Wamā lā tubsirūn
And what you do not see
Innahū laqawlu rasūlin karīm
[That] indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is the word of a noble Messenger.
Wamā huwa biqawli shā'irin qalīlam mā tu'minūn
And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.
Walā biqawli kāhinin qalīlam mā tadhakkarūn
Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.
Tanzīlum mir rabbil-'ālamīn
[It is] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
Walaw taqawwala 'alaynā ba'dal-aqāwīl
And if he [i.e., Muḥammad] had made up about Us some [false] sayings,
La akhadhnā minhu bil-yamīn
We would have seized him by the right hand;1745
Thumma laqata'nā minhul-watīn
Then We would have cut from him the aorta.1746
Famā minkum min ahadin 'anhu hājizīn
And there is no one of you who could prevent [Us] from him.
Wa innahū latadhkiratul lil-muttaqīn
And indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder for the righteous.
Wa innā lana'lamu anna minkum mukaddhibīn
And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.
Wa innahū lahasratun 'alal-kāfirīn
And indeed, it will be [a cause of] regret upon the disbelievers.
Wa innahū lahaqqul-yaqīn
And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.
Fasabbih bismi rabbikal-'azīm
So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
