Wal-fajr
By the dawn
Walayālin 'ashr
And [by] ten nights1913
Wash-shaf'i wal-watr
And [by] the even [number] and the odd
Wallayli idhā yasr
And [by] the night when it passes,
Hal fī dhālika qasamul lidhī hijr
Is there [not] in [all] that an oath [sufficient] for one of perception?1914
Alam tara kayfa fa'ala rabbuka bi'ād
Have you not considered how your Lord dealt with ʿAad -
Irama dhātil-'imād
Allatī lam yukhlaq mithluhā fil-bilād
The likes of whom had never been created in the land?
Wathamūdal-ladhīna jābus-sakhra bil-wād
And [with] Thamūd, who carved out the rocks in the valley?
Wafir'awna dhil-awtād
And [with] Pharaoh, owner of the stakes?1917
Alladhīna taghaw fil-bilād
[All of] whom oppressed within the lands
Fa aktharū fīhal-fasād
And increased therein the corruption.
Fasabba 'alayhim rabbuka sawta 'adhāb
So your Lord poured upon them a scourge of punishment.
Inna rabbaka labil-mirsād
Indeed, your Lord is in observation.
Fa ammal-insānu idhā mabtalāhu rabbuhū fa akramahū wana''amahū fayaqūlu rabbī akraman
And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, "My Lord has honored me."1918
Wa ammā idhā mabtalāhu faqadara 'alayhi rizqahū fayaqūlu rabbī ahānan
But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, "My Lord has humiliated me."
Kallā bal lā tukrimūnal-yatīm
No!1919 But you do not honor the orphan
Walā tahāddūna 'alā ta'āmil-miskīn
And you do not encourage one another to feed the poor.
Wata'kulūnat-turātha aklal lammā
And you consume inheritance, devouring [it] altogether,1920
Watuhibbūnal-māla hubban jammā
And you love wealth with immense love.
Kallā idhā dukkatil-ardu dakkan dakkā
No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed
Wajā'a rabbuka wal-malaku saffan saffā
And your Lord has come1921 and the angels, rank upon rank,
Wajiy'a yawma'idhi bijahannama yawma'idhin yatadhakkarul-insānu wa annā lahudh-dhikrā
And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but how [i.e., what good] to him will be the remembrance?
Yaqūlu yālaytanī qaddamtu lihayātī
He will say, "Oh, I wish I had sent ahead [some good] for my life."1922
Fayawma'idhil lā yu'addhibu 'adhābahū ahad
So on that Day, none will punish [as severely] as His punishment,
Walā yūthiqu wathāqahū ahad
And none will bind [as severely] as His binding [of the evildoers].
Yā'ayyatuhan-nafsul-mutma'innah
[To the righteous it will be said], "O reassured soul,
Irji'ī ilā rabbiki rādiyatam mardiyyah
Return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing [to Him],
Fadkhulī fī 'ibādī
And enter among My [righteous] servants
Wadkhulī jannatī
And enter My Paradise."
