But what would make you perceive, [O Muḥammad], that perhaps he might be purified1854
Aw yaddhakkaru fatanfa'ahudh-dhikrā
Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him?
Ammā manistaghnā
As for he who thinks himself without need,1855
Fa anta lahū tasaddā
To him you give attention.
Wamā 'alayka allā yazzakkā
And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified.1856
Wa ammā man jā'aka yas'ā
But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge]
Wahuwa yakhshā
While he fears [Allāh],

From him you are distracted.

Faman shā'a dhakarah
So whoever wills may remember it.1857
Fī suhufim mukarramah
[It is recorded] in honored sheets,
Mmarfū'atim mutahharah
Exalted and purified,
Bi aydī safarah
[Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels,
Kirāmi bararah
Noble and dutiful.
Qutilal-insānu mā akfarah
Destroyed [i.e., cursed] is man;1858 how disbelieving is he.

From what thing [i.e., substance] did He create him?
Min nutfatin khalaqahū faqaddarah
From a sperm-drop He created him and destined for him;1859
Thummas-sabīla yassarah
Then He eased the way for him;1860
Thumma amātahū fa aqbarah
Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him.1861
Thumma idhā shā'a ansharah
Then when He wills, He will resurrect him.
Kallā lammā yaqdi mā amarah
No! He [i.e., man] has not yet accomplished what He commanded him.
Falyanzuril-insānu ilā ta'āmih
Then let mankind look at his food -
Annā sababnal-mā'a sabbā
How We poured down water in torrents,
Thumma shaqaqnal-arda shaqqā
Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts],
Fa ambatnā fīhā habbā
And caused to grow within it grain
Wa'inaban waqadbā
And grapes and herbage

Wahadā'iqa ghulbā
And gardens of dense shrubbery
Wafākihatan wa abbā
And fruit and grass -
Mmatā'al lakum wali'an'āmikum
[As] enjoyment [i.e., provision] for you and your grazing livestock.
