Dua for leaving and entering the home

What to say when you leave the house and when you come back in.

1 Once

بِسم الله تَوَكَّلتُ على اللهِ، وَلاَ حول ولا قُوَّة إِلَّا بالله

Meaning and source

Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever says (upon leaving his house) 'In the name of Allah; I rely on Allah; there is no might and no power save in Allah', it will be said to him: 'You are guided, sufficed, and protected', and the devil will go far away from him."

The narration by Abu Dawūd has the following addition: "So he (the devil) says to another devil: How can you approach a man who has been guided, granted relief, and protected?”

Narrated by At-Termedhy - Narrated by Abu Daoud Grade: Authentic hadith

Explanation

The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) informs us in this Hadīth that if someone leaves their house and says, "In the name of Allah; I trust in Allah; there is no might and no power save in Allah", an angel will call out to him, saying: O servant of Allah, you have been guided to the straight path, you have been sufficed against your worries, and you have been protected from your enemies. So the devil assigned to him will move away from him, and another devil will say to the former: How can you misguide someone who has been guided, sufficed, and protected from all of the devils! Because he said those words, you cannot overpower him.

Meaning and source

Jābir ibn ‘Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him and his father) reported that he heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When one mentions Allah's name upon entering his house and upon eating, the devil says (to his companions): 'There is no night shelter nor supper here for you.' However, when one does not mention Allah's name upon entering his house, the devil says: 'You have found yourselves a night shelter.' If one does not mention Allah's name when starting to eat, the devil says: 'You have found yourselves both a night shelter and supper.'"

Narrated by Muslim Grade: Authentic

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commands us to mention Allah upon entering the house and before eating. When one mentions Allah saying: "Bismillāh" (in the Name of Allah) upon entering his house and before eating, the devil says to his companions: You shall not have a night shelter or supper in this house whose owner has sought protection against you by mentioning Allah Almighty. However, if one enters his house without mentioning Allah upon entering and before eating, the devil informs his companions that they will have a night shelter and supper in this house.

Benefits

  • It is recommended to mention Allah upon entering the house and before eating as the devil spends the night in the houses and eats from its dwellers' food if they do not mention the name of Allah Almighty.
  • The devil is closely observing the son of Adam in his deeds, acts, and all his affairs. So, when one is heedless of Dhikr (remembrance of Allah), the devil achieves what he wants from him.
  • Dhikr repels the devil.
  • Every devil has followers and allies who rejoice at his words and follow his commands.
