Qāla alam aqul laka innaka lan tastatī'a ma'iya sabrā
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"

Qāla alam aqul laka innaka lan tastatī'a ma'iya sabrā
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "Did I not tell you that with me you would never be able to have patience?"
Qāla in sa'altuka 'an shay'i ba'dahā falā tusāhibnī qad balaghta mil ladunnī 'udhrā
[Moses] said, "If I should ask you about anything after this, then do not keep me as a companion. You have obtained from me an excuse."
Fantalaqā hattā idhā atayā ahla qaryatinistat'amā ahlahā fa abaw an yudayyifūhumā fawajadā fīhā jidāran yurīdu an yanqadda fa aqāmahū qāla law shi'ta lattakhadhta 'alayhi ajrā
So they set out, until when they came to the people of a town, they asked its people for food, but they refused to offer them hospitality. And they found therein a wall about to collapse, so he [i.e., al-Khiḍr] restored it. [Moses] said, "If you wished, you could have taken for it a payment."
Qāla hādhā firāqu baynī wabaynika sa'unabbi'uka bita'wīli mā lam tastati' 'alayhi sabrā
[Al-Khiḍr] said, "This is parting between me and you. I will inform you of the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience.
Ammas-safīnatu fakānat limasākīna ya'malūna fil-bahri fa arattu an a'ībahā wakāna warā'ahum malikun ya'khudhu kulla safīnatin ghasbā
As for the ship, it belonged to poor people working at sea. So I intended to cause defect in it as there was after them a king who seized every [good] ship by force.
Wa ammal-ghulāmu fakāna abawāhu mu'minayni fakhashīnā an yurhiqahumā tughyānan wakufrā
And as for the boy, his parents were believers, and we feared that he would overburden them by transgression and disbelief.
Fa aradnā an yubdilahumā rabbuhumā khayram minhu zakawātan wa aqraba ruhmā
So we intended that their Lord should substitute for them one better than him in purity and nearer to mercy.
Wa ammal-jidāru fakāna lighulāmayni yatīmayni fil-madīnati wakāna tahtahū kanzul lahumā wakāna abūhumā sālihan fa arāda rabbuka an yablughā ashuddahumā wayastakhrijā kanzahumā rahmatam mir rabbika wamā fa'altuhū 'an amrī dhālika ta'wīlu mā lam tasti' 'alayhi sabrā
And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city, and there was beneath it a treasure for them, and their father had been righteous. So your Lord intended that they reach maturity and extract their treasure, as a mercy from your Lord. And I did it not of my own accord. That is the interpretation of that about which you could not have patience."
Wayas'alūnaka 'an dhil-qarnayni qul sa'atlū 'alaykum minhu dhikrā
And they ask you, [O Muḥammad], about Dhul-Qarnayn. Say, "I will recite to you about him a report."
Innā makkannā lahū fil-ardi wa ātaynāhu min kulli shay'in sababā
Indeed, We established him upon the earth, and We gave him from everything a way [i.e., means].
Fa atba'a sababā
So he followed a way

Until, when he reached the setting of the sun [i.e., the west], he found it [as if] setting in a body of dark water,795 and he found near it a people. We [i.e., Allāh] said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, either you punish [them] or else adopt among them [a way of] goodness."
Qāla ammā man zalama fasawfa nu'addhibuhū thumma yuraddu ilā rabbihī fayu'addhibuhū 'adhāban nukrā
He said, "As for one who wrongs,796 we will punish him. Then he will be returned to his Lord, and He will punish him with a terrible punishment [i.e., Hellfire].
Wa ammā man āmana wa'amila sālihan falahū jazā'anil-husnā wasanaqūlu lahū min amrinā yusrā
But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of the best [i.e., Paradise], and we [i.e., Dhul-Qarnayn] will speak to him from our command with ease."
Thumma atba'a sababā
Then he followed a way
Hattā idhā balagha matli'ash-shamsi wajadahā tatlu'u 'alā qawmil lam naj'al lahum min dūnihā sitrā
Until, when he came to the rising of the sun [i.e., the east], he found it rising on a people for whom We had not made against it any shield.
Kadhālika waqad ahatnā bimā ladayhi khubrā
Thus.797 And We had encompassed [all] that he had in knowledge.
Thumma atba'a sababā
Then he followed a way
Hattā idhā balagha baynas-saddayni wajada min dūnihimā qawmal lā yakādūna yafqahūna qawlā
Until, when he reached [a pass] between two mountains, he found beside them a people who could hardly understand [his] speech.
Qālū yādhal-qarnayni inna ya'jūja wama'jūja mufsidūna fil-ardi fahal naj'alu laka kharjan 'alā an taj'ala baynanā wabaynahum saddā
They said, "O Dhul-Qarnayn, indeed Gog and Magog798 are [great] corrupters in the land. So may we assign for you an expenditure that you might make between us and them a barrier?"
Qāla mā makkannī fīhi rabbī khayrun fa a'īnūnī biquwwatin aj'al baynakum wabaynahum radmā
He said, "That in which my Lord has established me is better [than what you offer], but assist me with strength [i.e., manpower]; I will make between you and them a dam.
Ātūnī zubaral-hadīdi hattā idhā sāwā baynas-sadafayni qālanfukhū hattā idhā ja'alahū nāran qāla ātūnī ufrigh 'alayhi qitrā
Bring me bars of iron" - until, when he had leveled [them] between the two mountain walls, he said, "Blow [with bellows]," until when he had made it [like] fire, he said, "Bring me, that I may pour over it molten copper."
Famastā'ū an yazharūhu wamastatā'ū lahū naqbā
So they [i.e., Gog and Magog] were unable to pass over it, nor were they able [to effect] in it any penetration.
Qāla hādhā rahmatum mir rabbī fa idhā jā'a wa'du rabbī ja'alahū dakkā'a wakāna wa'du rabbī haqqā
[Dhul-Qarnayn] said, "This is a mercy from my Lord; but when the promise of my Lord799 comes [i.e., approaches], He will make it level, and ever is the promise of my Lord true."
Wataraknā ba'dahum yawma'idhin yamūju fī ba'din wanufikha fis-sūri fajama'nāhum jam'ā
And We will leave them that day800 surging over each other, and [then] the Horn will be blown, and We will assemble them in [one] assembly.
Wa'aradnā jahannama yawma'idhil lil-kāfirīna 'ardā
And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on display -
Alladhīna kānat a'yunuhum fī ghitā'in 'an dhikrī wakānū lā yastatī'ūna sam'ā
Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance,801 and they were not able to hear.802
Afahasibal-ladhīna kafarū an yattakhidhū 'ibādī min dūnī awliyā'a innā a'tadnā jahannama lil-kāfirīna nuzulā
Then do those who disbelieve think that they can take My servants instead of Me as allies? Indeed, We have prepared Hell for the disbelievers as a lodging.
Qul hal nunabbi'ukum bil-akhsarīna a'mālā
Say, [O Muḥammad], "Shall we [believers] inform you of the greatest losers as to [their] deeds?
Alladhīna dalla sa'yuhum fil-hayawātid-dunyā wahum yahsabūna annahum yuhsinūna sun'ā
[They are] those whose effort is lost in worldly life, while they think that they are doing well in work."
Ulā'ikal-ladhīna kafarū bi'āyāti rabbihim waliqā'ihī fahabitat a'māluhum falā nuqīmu lahum yawmal-qiyāmati waznā
Those are the ones who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord and in [their] meeting Him, so their deeds have become worthless; and We will not assign to them on the Day of Resurrection any weight [i.e., importance].
Dhālika jazā'uhum jahannamu bimā kafarū wattakhadhū āyātī warusulī huzuwā
That is their recompense - Hell - for what they denied and [because] they took My signs and My messengers in ridicule.
Innal-ladhīna āmanū wa'amilus-sālihāti kānat lahum jannātul-firdawsi nuzulā
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - they will have the Gardens of Paradise803 as a lodging,
Khālidīna fīhā lā yabghūna 'anhā hiwalā
Wherein they abide eternally. They will not desire from it any transfer.
Qul law kānal-bahru midādal likalimāti rabbī lanafidal-bahru qabla an tanfada kalimātu rabbī walaw ji'nā bimithlihī madadā
Say, "If the sea were ink for [writing] the words804 of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it in [continual] supplement."

Say, "I am only a man like you, to whom has been revealed that your god is one God. So whoever would hope for the meeting with his Lord - let him do righteous work and not associate in the worship of his Lord anyone."

Wa innī khiftul-mawāliya min warā'ī wakānatimra'atī 'āqiran fahab lī mil ladunka waliyyā

Who will inherit me809 and inherit from the family of Jacob. And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]."
Yāzakariyyā innā nubasshiruka bighulāminismuhū yahyā lam naj'al lahū min qablu samiyyā
[He was told],810 "O Zechariah, indeed We give you good tidings of a boy whose name will be John. We have not assigned to any before [this] name."
Qāla rabbi annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun wakānatimra'atī 'āqiran waqad balaghtu minal-kibari 'itiyyā
He said, "My Lord, how will I have a boy when my wife has been barren and I have reached extreme old age?"
Qāla kadhālika qāla rabbuka huwa 'alayya hayyinun waqad khalaqtuka min qablu walam taku shay'ā
[An angel] said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before, while you were nothing.'"
Qāla rabbij'al lī āyatan qāla āyatuka allā tukalliman-nāsa thalātha layālin sawiyyā
[Zechariah] said, "My Lord, make for me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to the people for three nights, [being] sound."811
Fakharaja 'alā qawmihī minal-mihrābi fa awhā ilayhim an sabbihū bukratan wa'ashiyyā
So he came out to his people from the prayer chamber and signaled to them to exalt [Allāh] in the morning and afternoon.

Yāyahyā khudhil-kitāba biquwwatin wa ātaynāhul-hukma sabiyyā
[Allāh said], "O John, take the Scripture [i.e., adhere to it] with determination." And We gave him judgement [while yet] a boy

Wabarrā biwālidayhi walam yakun jabbāran 'asiyyā
And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.

Wadhkur fil-kitābi maryama idhintabadhat min ahlihā makānan sharqiyyā
And mention, [O Muḥammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place toward the east.

And she took, in seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel [i.e., Gabriel], and he represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.
Qālat innī a'ūdhu bir-rahmāni minka in kunta taqiyyā
She said, "Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if you should be fearing of Allāh."
Qāla innamā ana rasūlu rabbiki li ahaba laki ghulāman zakiyyā
He said, "I am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy [i.e., son]."
Qālat annā yakūnu lī ghulāmun walam yamsasnī basharun walam aku baghiyyā
She said, "How can I have a boy while no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
Qāla kadhāliki qāla rabbuki huwa 'alayya hayyinun walinaj'alahū āyatal lin-nāsi warahmatam minnā wakāna amram maqdiyyā
He said, "Thus [it will be]; your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign to the people and a mercy from Us. And it is a matter [already] decreed.'"
Fahamalathu fantabadhat bihī makānan qasiyyā
So she conceived him, and she withdrew with him to a remote place.
Fa ajā'ahal-makhādu ilā jidh'in-nakhlati qālat yālaytanī mittu qabla hādhā wakuntu nasyam mansiyyā
And the pains of childbirth drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She said, "Oh, I wish I had died before this and was in oblivion, forgotten."
Fanādāhā min tahtihā allā tahzanī qad ja'ala rabbuki tahtaki sariyyā
But he812 called her from below her, "Do not grieve; your Lord has provided beneath you a stream.
Wahuzzī ilayki bijidh'in-nakhlati tusāqit 'alayki rutaban janiyyā
And shake toward you the trunk of the palm tree; it will drop upon you ripe, fresh dates.
Fakulī washrabī waqarrī 'aynan fa immā tarayinna minal-bashari ahadan faqūlī innī nadhartu lir-rahmāni sawman falan ukallimal-yawma insiyyā
So eat and drink and be contented. And if you see from among humanity anyone, say, 'Indeed, I have vowed to the Most Merciful abstention, so I will not speak today to [any] man.'"
Fa atat bihī qawmahā tahmiluhū qālū yāmaryamu laqad ji'ti shay'an fariyyā
Then she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "O Mary, you have certainly done a thing unprecedented.
Yā'ukhta hārūna mā kāna abūkimra'a saw'in wamā kānat ummuki baghiyyā
O sister [i.e., descendant] of Aaron, your father was not a man of evil, nor was your mother unchaste."
Fa ashārat ilayhi qālū kayfa nukallimu man kāna fil-mahdi sabiyyā
So she pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to one who is in the cradle a child?"
Qāla innī 'abdullāhi ātāniyal-kitāba waja'alanī nabiyyā
[Jesus] said, "Indeed, I am the servant of Allāh. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet.
Waja'alanī mubārakan ayna mā kuntu wa awsānī bis-salawāti waz-zakawāti mā dumtu hayyā
And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakāh as long as I remain alive
Wabarrā biwālidatī walam yaj'alnī jabbāran shaqiyyā
And [made me] dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant.
Was-salāmu 'alayya yawma wulittu wayawma amūtu wayawma ub'athu hayyā
And peace is on me the day I was born and the day I will die and the day I am raised alive."
Dhālika 'īsabnu maryama qawlal-haqqil-ladhī fīhi yamtarūn
That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth about which they are in dispute.
Mā kāna lillāhi an yattakhidha min waladin subhānahū idhā qadā amran fa innamā yaqūlu lahū kun fayakūn
It is not [befitting] for Allāh to take a son; exalted is He!813 When He decrees an affair, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
Wa innallāha rabbī warabbukum fa'budūhu hādhā sirātum mustaqīm
[Jesus said], "And indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. That is a straight path."
Fakhtalafal-ahzābu mim baynihim fawaylul lilladhīna kafarū mim mashhadi yawmin 'azīm
Then the factions differed [concerning Jesus] from among them, so woe to those who disbelieved - from the scene of a tremendous Day.
How [clearly] they will hear and see the Day they come to Us, but the wrongdoers today are in clear error.
Wa andhirhum yawmal-hasrati idh qudiyal-amru wahum fī ghaflatin wahum lā yu'minūn
And warn them, [O Muḥammad], of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded;814 and [yet], they are in [a state of] heedlessness, and they do not believe.
Innā nahnu narithul-arda waman 'alayhā wa ilaynā yurja'ūn
Indeed, it is We who will inherit the earth and whoever is on it, and to Us they will be returned.
Wadhkur fil-kitābi ibrāhīma innahū kāna siddīqan nabiyyā
And mention in the Book [the story of] Abraham. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.
Idh qāla li abīhi yā'abati lima ta'budu mā lā yasma'u walā yubsiru walā yughnī 'anka shay'ā
[Mention] when he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship that which does not hear and does not see and will not benefit you at all?
Yā'abati innī qad jā'anī minal-'ilmi mā lam ya'tika fattabi'nī ahdika sirātan sawiyyā
O my father, indeed there has come to me of knowledge that which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you to an even path.
Yā'abati lā ta'budish-shaytāna innash-shaytāna kāna lir-rahmāni 'asiyyā
O my father, do not worship [i.e., obey] Satan. Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.
Yā'abati innī akhāfu an yamassaka 'adhābum minar-rahmāni fatakūna lish-shaytāni waliyyā
O my father, indeed I fear that there will touch you a punishment from the Most Merciful so you would be to Satan a companion [in Hellfire]."
[His father] said, "Have you no desire for my gods, O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you, so avoid me a prolonged time."
Qāla salāmun 'alayka sa'astaghfiru laka rabbī innahū kāna bī hafiyyā
[Abraham] said, "Peace [i.e., safety] will be upon you.815 I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord. Indeed, He is ever gracious to me.
Wa a'tazilukum wamā tad'ūna min dūnillāhi wa ad'ū rabbī 'asā allā akūna bidu'ā'i rabbī shaqiyyā
And I will leave you and those you invoke other than Allāh and will invoke816 my Lord. I expect that I will not be in invocation to my Lord unhappy [i.e., disappointed]."
Falamma'tazalahum wamā ya'budūna min dūnillāhi wahabnā lahū ishāqa waya'qūba wakullan ja'alnā nabiyyā
So when he had left them and those they worshipped other than Allāh, We gave him Isaac and Jacob, and each [of them] We made a prophet.
Wawahabnā lahum mir rahmatinā waja'alnā lahum lisāna sidqin 'aliyyā
And We gave them of Our mercy, and We made for them a mention [i.e., reputation] of high honor.
Wadhkur fil-kitābi mūsā innahū kāna mukhlasan wakāna rasūlan nabiyyā
And mention in the Book, Moses. Indeed, he was chosen, and he was a messenger and a prophet.817
Wanādaynāhu min jānibit-tūril-aymani waqarrabnāhu najiyyā
And We called him from the side of the mount818 at [his] right and brought him near, confiding [to him].
Wawahabnā lahū mir rahmatinā akhāhu hārūna nabiyyā
And We gave him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.
Wadhkur fil-kitābi ismā'īla innahū kāna sādiqal-wa'di wakāna rasūlan nabiyyā
And mention in the Book, Ishmael. Indeed, he was true to his promise, and he was a messenger and a prophet.
Wakāna ya'muru ahlahū bis-salawāti waz-zakawāti wakāna 'inda rabbihī mardiyyā
And he used to enjoin on his people prayer and zakāh and was to his Lord pleasing [i.e., accepted by Him].
Wadhkur fil-kitābi idrīsa innahū kāna siddīqan nabiyyā
And mention in the Book, Idrees. Indeed, he was a man of truth and a prophet.
Warafa'nāhu makānan 'aliyyā
And We raised him to a high station.
Ulā'ikal-ladhīna an'amallāhu 'alayhim minan-nabiyyina min dhurriyyati ādama wamimman hamalnā ma'a nūhin wamin dhurriyyati ibrāhīma wa isrā'īla wamimman hadaynā wajtabaynā idhā tutlā 'alayhim āyātur-rahmāni kharrū sujjadan wabukiyyā
Those were the ones upon whom Allāh bestowed favor from among the prophets of the descendants of Adam and of those We carried [in the ship] with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel [i.e., Jacob], and of those whom We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell in prostration and weeping.
Fakhalafa mim ba'dihim khalfun adā'us-salawāta wattaba'ush-shahawāti fasawfa yalqawna ghayyā
But there came after them successors [i.e., later generations] who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil819 -
Illā man tāba wa āmana wa'amila sālihan fa ulā'ika yadkhulūnal-jannata walā yuzlamūna shay'ā
Except those who repent, believe and do righteousness; for those will enter Paradise and will not be wronged at all.
Jannāti 'adninil-latī wa'adar-rahmānu 'ibādahū bil-ghaybi innahū kāna wa'duhū ma'tiyyā
[Therein are] gardens of perpetual residence which the Most Merciful has promised His servants in the unseen. Indeed, His promise has ever been eminent.820
Llā yasma'ūna fīhā laghwan illā salāman walahum rizquhum fīhā bukratan wa'ashiyyā
They will not hear therein any ill speech - only [greetings of] peace - and they will have their provision therein, morning and afternoon.
Tilkal-jannatul-latī nūrithu min 'ibādinā man kāna taqiyyā
That is Paradise, which We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who were fearing of Allāh.
Wamā natanazzalu illā bi amri rabbika lahū mā bayna aydīnā wamā khalfanā wamā bayna dhālika wamā kāna rabbuka nasiyyā
[Gabriel said],821 "And we [angels] descend not except by the order of your Lord. To Him belongs that before us and that behind us and what is in between. And never is your Lord forgetful -
Rrabbus-samāwāti wal-ardi wamā baynahumā fa'budhu wastabir li'ibādatihī hal ta'lamu lahū samiyyā
Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them - so worship Him and have patience for His worship. Do you know of any similarity to Him?"
Wayaqūlul-insānu a'idhā mā mittu lasawfa ukhraju hayyā
And man [i.e., the disbeliever] says, "When I have died, am I going to be brought forth alive?"
Awalā yadhkurul-insānu annā khalaqnāhu min qablu walam yaku shay'ā
Does man not remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?
Fawarabbika lanahshurannahum wash-shayātīna thumma lanuhdirannahum hawla jahannama jithiyyā
So by your Lord, We will surely gather them and the devils; then We will bring them to be present around Hell upon their knees.822
Thumma lananzi'anna min kulli shī'atin ayyuhum ashaddu 'alar-rahmāni 'itiyyā
Then We will surely extract from every sect those of them who were worst against the Most Merciful in insolence.
Thumma lanahnu a'lamu billadhīna hum awlā bihā siliyyā
Then, surely it is We who are most knowing of those most worthy of burning therein.
Wa im minkum illā wāriduhā kāna 'alā rabbika hatmam maqdiyyā
And there is none of you except he will come to it.823 This is upon your Lord an inevitability decreed.
Thumma nunajjil-ladhīnat-taqaw wwanadharuz-zālimīna fīhā jithiyyā
Then We will save those who feared Allāh and leave the wrongdoers within it, on their knees.
Wa idhā tutlā 'alayhim āyātunā bayyinātin qālal-ladhīna kafarū lilladhīna āmanū ayyul-farīqayni khayrum maqāman wa ahsanu nadiyyā
And when Our verses are recited to them as clear evidences, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of [our] two parties is best in position and best in association?"824
Wakam ahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hum ahsanu athāthan wari'yā
And how many a generation have We destroyed before them who were better in possessions and [outward] appearance?

Say, "Whoever is in error - let the Most Merciful extend for him an extension [in wealth and time] until, when they see that which they were promised - either punishment [in this world] or the Hour [of resurrection] - they will come to know who is worst in position and weaker in soldiers."
Wayazīdullāhul-ladhīnahtadaw hudan wal-bāqiyātus-sālihātu khayrun 'inda rabbika thawāban wakhayrum maraddā
And Allāh increases those who were guided, in guidance, and the enduring good deeds are better to your Lord825 for reward and better for recourse.
Afara'aytal-ladhī kafara bi'āyātinā waqāla la ūtayanna mālan wawaladā
Then, have you seen he who disbelieved in Our verses and said, "I will surely be given wealth and children [in the next life]"?
Attala'al-ghayba amit-takhadha 'indar-rahmāni 'ahdā
Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken from the Most Merciful a promise?
Kallā sanaktubu mā yaqūlu wanamuddu lahū minal-'adhābi maddā
No! We will record what he says and extend [i.e., increase] for him from the punishment extensively.
Wanarithuhū mā yaqūlu waya'tīnā fardā
And We will inherit him [in] what he mentions,826 and he will come to Us alone.
Wattakhadhū min dūnillāhi ālihatal liyakūnū lahum 'izzā
And they have taken besides Allāh [false] deities that they would be for them [a source of] honor.
Kallā sayakfurūna bi'ibādatihim wayakūnūna 'alayhim diddā
No! They [i.e., those "gods"] will deny their worship of them and will be against them opponents [on the Day of Judgement].
Alam tara annā arsalnash-shayātīna 'alal-kāfirīna ta'uzzuhum azzā
Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them [to evil] with [constant] incitement?
Falā ta'jal 'alayhim innamā na'uddu lahum 'addā
So be not impatient over them. We only count out [i.e., allow] to them a [limited] number.827
Yawma nahshurul-muttaqīna ilar-rahmāni wafdā
On the Day We will gather the righteous to the Most Merciful as a delegation
Wanasūqul-mujrimīna ilā jahannama wirdā
And will drive the criminals to Hell in thirst
Llā yamlikūnash-shafā'ata illā manit-takhadha 'indar-rahmāni 'ahdā
None will have [power of] intercession except he who had taken from the Most Merciful a covenant.828
Waqālut-takhadhar-rahmānu waladā
And they say, "The Most Merciful has taken [for Himself] a son."
Llaqad ji'tum shay'an iddā
You have done an atrocious thing.
Takādus-samāwātu yatafattarna minhu watanshaqqul-ardu watakhirrul-jibālu haddā
The heavens almost rupture therefrom and the earth splits open and the mountains collapse in devastation
An da'aw lir-rahmāni waladā
That they attribute to the Most Merciful a son.
Wamā yambaghī lir-rahmāni an yattakhidha waladā
And it is not appropriate for the Most Merciful that He should take a son.
In kullu man fis-samāwāti wal-ardi illā ātir-rahmāni 'abdā
There is no one in the heavens and earth but that he comes to the Most Merciful as a servant.
Llaqad ahsāhum wa'addahum 'addā
He has enumerated them and counted them a [full] counting.
Wakulluhum ātīhi yawmal-qiyāmati fardā
And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone.
Innal-ladhīna āmanū wa'amilus-sālihāti sayaj'alu lahumur-rahmānu wuddā
Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - the Most Merciful will appoint for them affection.829
Fa innamā yassarnāhu bilisānika litubasshira bihil-muttaqīna watundhira bihī qawmal luddā
So, [O Muḥammad], We have only made it [i.e., the Qur’ān] easy in your tongue [i.e., the Arabic language] that you may give good tidings thereby to the righteous and warn thereby a hostile people.
Wakam ahlaknā qablahum min qarnin hal tuhissu minhum min ahadin aw tasma'u lahum rikzā
And how many have We destroyed before them of generations? Do you perceive of them anyone or hear from them a sound?

We have not sent down to you the Qur’ān that you be distressed
Illā tadhkiratal liman yakhshā
But only as a reminder for those who fear [Allāh] -

Ar-rahmānu 'alal-'arshistawā
The Most Merciful [who is] above the Throne established.832
Lahū mā fis-samāwāti wamā fil-ardi wamā baynahumā wamā tahtath-tharā
To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth and what is between them and what is under the soil.
And if you speak aloud - then indeed, He knows the secret and what is [even] more hidden.
Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa lahul-asmā'ul-husnā
Allāh - there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names.
Wahal atāka hadīthu mūsā
And has the story of Moses reached you? -
Idh ra'ā nāran faqāla li ahlihimkuthū innī ānastu nāral la'allī ātīkum minhā biqabasin aw ajidu 'alan-nāri hudā
When he saw a fire and said to his family, "Stay here; indeed, I have perceived a fire; perhaps I can bring you a torch or find at the fire some guidance."
Falammā atāhā nūdiya yāmūsā
And when he came to it, he was called, "O Moses,
Innī ana rabbuka fakhla' na'layka innaka bil-wādil-muqaddasi tuwā
Indeed, I am your Lord, so remove your sandals. Indeed, you are in the blessed valley of Ṭuwā.
Wa anakhtartuka fastami' limā yūhā
And I have chosen you, so listen to what is revealed [to you].
Innanī anallāhu lā ilāha illā ana fa'budnī wa aqimis-salawāta lidhikrī
Indeed, I am Allāh. There is no deity except Me, so worship Me and establish prayer for My remembrance.
Innas-sā'ata ātiyatun akādu ukhfīhā litujzā kullu nafsi bimā tas'ā
Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it833 - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.

Falā yasuddannaka 'anhā mal lā yu'minu bihā wattaba'a hawāhu fatardā
So do not let one avert you from it834 who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
Wamā tilka biyamīnika yāmūsā
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
Qāla hiya 'asāya atawakka'u 'alayhā wa ahusshu bihā 'alā ghanamī waliya fīhā ma'āribu ukhrā
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
Qāla alqihā yāmūsā
[Allāh] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
Fa alqāhā fa idhā hiya hayyatun tas'ā
So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.

Qāla khudhhā walā takhaf sanu'īduhā sīratahal-ūlā
[Allāh] said, "Seize it and fear not; We will return it to its former condition.

Linuriyaka min āyātinal-kubrā
That We may show you [some] of Our greater signs.
Idhhab ilā fir'awna innahū taghā
Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed [i.e., tyrannized]."
Qāla rabbishrah lī sadrī
[Moses] said, "My Lord, expand [i.e., relax] for me my breast [with assurance]

Yafqahū qawlī
That they may understand my speech.

Waj'al lī wazīram min ahlī
And appoint for me a minister [i.e., assistant] from my family -

Hārūna akhī
Aaron, my brother.

Indeed, You are of us ever Seeing."
Qāla qad ūtīta su'laka yāmūsā
[Allāh] said, "You have been granted your request, O Moses.

[Saying], 'Cast him into the chest and cast it into the river, and the river will throw it onto the bank; there will take him an enemy to Me and an enemy to him.' And I bestowed upon you love from Me835 that you would be brought up under My eye [i.e., observation and care].

[And We favored you] when your sister went and said, 'Shall I direct you to someone who will be responsible for him?' So We restored you to your mother that she might be content and not grieve. And you killed someone,836 but We saved you from retaliation and tried you with a [severe] trial. And you remained [some] years among the people of Madyan. Then you came [here] at the decreed time, O Moses.

Go, you and your brother, with My signs and do not slacken in My remembrance.
Idhhabā ilā fir'awna innahū taghā
Go, both of you, to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

And speak to him with gentle speech that perhaps he may be reminded or fear [Allāh]."

Qāla lā takhāfā innanī ma'akumā asma'u wa arā
[Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, I am with you both; I hear and I see.

Qāla famar rabbukumā yāmūsā
[Pharaoh] said, "So who is the Lord of you two, O Moses?"

Qāla famā bālul-qurūnil-ūlā
[Pharaoh] said, "Then what is the case of the former generations?"

[It is He] who has made for you the earth as a bed [spread out] and inserted therein for you roadways and sent down from the sky, rain and produced thereby categories of various plants.

Minhā khalaqnākum wafīhā nu'īdukum waminhā nukhrijukum tāratan ukhrā
From it [i.e., the earth] We created you, and into it We will return you, and from it We will extract you another time.
Walaqad araynāhu āyātinā kullahā fakaddhaba wa abā
And We certainly showed him [i.e., Pharaoh] Our signs - all of them - but he denied and refused.
Qāla aji'tanā litukhrijanā min ardinā bisihrika yāmūsā
He said, "Have you come to us to drive us out of our land with your magic, O Moses?
Falana'tiyannaka bisihrim mithlihī faj'al baynanā wabaynaka maw'idal lā nukhlifuhū nahnu walā anta makānan suwā
Then we will surely bring you magic like it, so make between us and you an appointment, which we will not fail to keep and neither will you, in a place assigned."839
Qāla maw'idukum yawmuz-zīnati wa an yuhsharan-nāsu duhā
[Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."840
Fatawallā fir'awnu fajama'a kaydahū thumma atā
So Pharaoh went away, put together his plan, and then came [to Moses].
Qāla lahum mūsā waylakum lā taftarū 'alallāhi kadhiban fayushitakum bi'adhābin waqad khāba maniftarā
Moses said to them [i.e., the magicians summoned by Pharaoh], "Woe to you! Do not invent a lie against Allāh or He will exterminate you with a punishment; and he has failed who invents [such falsehood]."
Fatanāza'ū amrahum baynahum wa asarrun-najwā
So they disputed over their affair among themselves and concealed their private conversation.
Qālū in hādhāni lasāhirāni yurīdāni an yukhrijākum min ardikum bisihrihimā wayadhhabā bitarīqatikumul-muthlā
They said, "Indeed, these are two magicians who want to drive you out of your land with their magic and do away with your most exemplary way [i.e., religion or tradition].
Fa ajmi'ū kaydakum thumma'tū saffan waqad aflahal-yawma manista'lā
So resolve upon your plan and then come [forward] in line. And he has succeeded today who overcomes."
Qālū yāmūsā immā an tulqiya wa immā an nakūna awwala man alqā
They said, "O Moses, either you throw or we will be the first to throw."
Qāla bal alqū fa idhā hibāluhum wa'isiyyuhum yukhayyalu ilayhi min sihrihim annahā tas'ā
He said, "Rather, you throw." And suddenly their ropes and staffs seemed to him from their magic that they were moving [like snakes].
Fa awjasa fī nafsihī khīfatam mūsā
And he sensed within himself apprehension, did Moses.
Qulnā lā takhaf innaka antal-a'lā
We [i.e., Allāh] said, "Fear not. Indeed, it is you who are superior.
And throw what is in your right hand; it will swallow up what they have crafted. What they have crafted is but the trick of a magician, and the magician will not succeed wherever he is."
Fa ulqiyas-saharatu sujjadan qālū āmannā birabbi hārūna wamūsā
So the magicians fell down in prostration.841 They said, "We have believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses."
Qāla āmantum lahū qabla an ādhana lakum innahū lakabīrukumul-ladhī 'allamakumus-sihra fala'uqatti'anna aydiyakum wa arjulakum min khilāfin wala'usallibannakum fī judhū'in-nakhli walata'lamunna ayyunā ashaddu 'adhāban wa abqā
[Pharaoh] said, "You believed him [i.e., Moses] before I gave you permission. Indeed, he is your leader who has taught you magic. So I will surely cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, and I will crucify you on the trunks of palm trees, and you will surely know which of us is more severe in [giving] punishment and more enduring."
Qālū lan nu'thiraka 'alā mā jā'anā minal-bayyināti walladhī fataranā faqdi mā anta qādin innamā taqdī hādhihil-hayawātad-dunyā
They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us.842 So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.
Innā āmannā birabbinā liyaghfira lanā khatāyānā wamā akrahtanā 'alayhi minas-sihri wallāhu khayrun wa abqā
Indeed, we have believed in our Lord that He may forgive us our sins and what you compelled us [to do] of magic. And Allāh is better and more enduring."843
Innahū man ya'ti rabbahū mujriman fa inna lahū jahannama lā yamūtu fīhā walā yahyā
Indeed, whoever comes to his Lord as a criminal - indeed, for him is Hell; he will neither die therein nor live.
Waman ya'tihī mu'minan qad 'amilas-sālihāti fa ulā'ika lahumud-darajātul-'ulā
But whoever comes to Him as a believer having done righteous deeds - for those will be the highest degrees [in position]:
Jannātu 'adnin tajrī min tahtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā wadhālika jazā'u man tazakkā
Gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally. And that is the reward of one who purifies himself.844
Walaqad awhaynā ilā mūsā an asri bi'ibādī fadrib lahum tarīqan fil-bahri yabasal lā takhāfu darakan walā takhshā
And We had inspired to Moses, "Travel by night with My servants and strike for them a dry path through the sea; you will not fear being overtaken [by Pharaoh] nor be afraid [of drowning]."
Fa atba'ahum fir'awnu bijunūdihī faghashiyahum minal-yammi mā ghashiyahum
So Pharaoh pursued them with his soldiers, and there covered them from the sea that which covered them,845
Wa adalla fir'awnu qawmahū wamā hadā
And Pharaoh led his people astray and did not guide [them].
Yābanī isrā'īla qad anjaynākum min 'aduwwikum wawā'adnākum jānibat-tūril-aymana wanazzalnā 'alaykumul-manna was-salwā
O Children of Israel, We delivered you from your enemy, and We made an appointment with you846 at the right side of the mount, and We sent down to you manna and quails,
Kulū min tayyibāti mā razaqnākum walā tatghaw fīhi fayahilla 'alaykum ghadabī waman yahlil 'alayhi ghadabī faqad hawā
[Saying], "Eat from the good things with which We have provided you and do not transgress [or oppress others] therein, lest My anger should descend upon you. And he upon whom My anger descends has certainly fallen [i.e., perished]."
Wa innī laghaffārul liman tāba wa āmana wa'amila sālihan thummahtadā
But indeed, I am the Perpetual Forgiver of whoever repents and believes and does righteousness and then continues in guidance.
Wamā a'jalaka 'an qawmika yāmūsā
[Allāh said], "And what made you hasten from your people, O Moses?"
Qāla hum ulā'i 'alā atharī wa'ajiltu ilayka rabbi litardā
He said, "They are close upon my tracks, and I hastened to You, my Lord, that You be pleased."
Qāla fa innā qad fatannā qawmaka mim ba'dika wa adallahumus-sāmiriyy
[Allāh] said, "But indeed, We have tried your people after you [departed], and the Sāmirī847 has led them astray."
Faraja'a mūsā ilā qawmihī ghadbāna asifan qāla yāqawmi alam ya'idkum rabbukum wa'dan hasanan afatāla 'alaykumul-'ahdu am arattum an yahilla 'alaykum ghadabum mir rabbikum fa akhlaftum maw'idī
So Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved.848 He said, "O my people, did your Lord not make you a good promise?849 Then, was the time [of its fulfillment] too long for you, or did you wish that wrath from your Lord descend upon you, so you broke your promise [of obedience] to me?"
Qālū mā akhlafnā maw'idaka bimalkinā walākinnā hummilnā awzāram min zīnatil-qawmi faqadhafnāhā fakadhālika alqas-sāmiriyy
They said, "We did not break our promise to you by our will, but we were made to carry burdens from the ornaments of the people [of Pharaoh], so we threw them [into the fire], and thus did the Sāmirī throw."
Fa akhraja lahum 'ijlan jasadal lahū khuwārun faqālū hādhā ilāhukum wa ilāhu mūsā fanasiy
And he extracted for them [the statue of] a calf which had a lowing sound, and they said, "This is your god and the god of Moses, but he forgot."
Afalā yarawna allā yarji'u ilayhim qawlan walā yamliku lahum darran walā naf'ā
Did they not see that it could not return to them any speech [i.e., response] and that it did not possess for them any harm or benefit?
Walaqad qāla lahum hārūnu min qablu yāqawmi innamā futintum bihī wa inna rabbakumur-rahmānu fattabi'ūnī wa atī'ū amrī
And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order."
Qālū lan nabraha 'alayhi 'ākifīna hattā yarji'a ilaynā mūsā
They said, "We will never cease being devoted to it [i.e., the calf] until Moses returns to us."
Qāla yāhārūnu mā mana'aka idh ra'aytahum dallū
[Moses] said, "O Aaron, what prevented you, when you saw them going astray,
Allā tattabi'ani afa'asayta amrī
From following me? Then have you disobeyed my order?"
Qāla yabna'umma lā ta'khudh bilihyatī walā bira'sī innī khashītu an taqūla farraqta bayna banī isrā'īla walam tarqub qawlī
[Aaron] said, "O son of my mother, do not seize [me] by my beard or by my head. Indeed, I feared that you would say, 'You caused division among the Children of Israel, and you did not observe [or await] my word.'"
Qāla famā khatbuka yāsāmiriyy
[Moses] said, "And what is your case, O Sāmirī?"
Qāla basurtu bimā lam yabsurū bihī faqabadtu qabdatam min atharir-rasūli fanabadhtuhā wakadhālika sawwalat lī nafsī
He said, "I saw what they did not see, so I took a handful [of dust] from the track of the messenger850 and threw it,851 and thus did my soul entice me."

[Moses] said, "Then go. And indeed, it is [decreed] for you in [this] life to say, 'No contact.'852 And indeed, you have an appointment [in the Hereafter] you will not fail to keep. And look at your 'god' to which you remained devoted. We will surely burn it and blow it [i.e., its ashes] into the sea with a blast.
Innamā ilāhukumullāhul-ladhī lā ilāha illā huwa wasi'a kulla shay'in 'ilmā
Your god is only Allāh, except for whom there is no deity. He has encompassed all things in knowledge."
Kadhālika naqussu 'alayka min ambā'i mā qad sabaqa waqad ātaynāka mil ladunnā dhikrā
Thus, [O Muḥammad], We relate to you from the news of what has preceded. And We have certainly given you from Us a message [i.e., the Qur’ān].
Mman a'rada 'anhu fa innahū yahmilu yawmal-qiyāmati wizrā
Whoever turns away from it - then indeed, he will bear on the Day of Resurrection a burden [i.e., great sin],
Khālidīna fīhi wasā'a lahum yawmal-qiyāmati himlā
[Abiding] eternally therein,853 and evil it is for them on the Day of Resurrection as a load -

Yawma yunfakhu fis-sūri wanahshurul-mujrimīna yawma'idhin zurqā
The Day the Horn will be blown. And We will gather the criminals, that Day, blue-eyed.854
Yatakhāfatūna baynahum il labithtum illā 'ashrā
They will murmur among themselves, "You remained not but ten [days in the world]."
Nnahnu a'lamu bimā yaqūlūna idh yaqūlu amthaluhum tarīqatan il labithtum illā yawmā
We are most knowing of what they say when the best of them in manner [i.e., wisdom or speech] will say, "You remained not but one day."

Yawma'idhin yattabi'ūnad-dā'iya lā 'iwaja lahū wakhasha'atil-aswātu lir-rahmāni falā tasma'u illā hamsā
That Day, they [i.e., everyone] will follow [the call of] the Caller856 [with] no deviation therefrom, and [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper [of footsteps].

That Day, no intercession will benefit except [that of] one to whom the Most Merciful has given permission and has accepted his word.
Ya'lamu mā bayna aydīhim wamā khalfahum walā yuhītūna bihī 'ilmā
He [i.e., Allāh] knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them,857 but they do not encompass it [i.e., what He knows] in knowledge.
Wa'anatil-wujūhu lil-hayyil-qayyūmi waqad khāba man hamala zulmā
And [all] faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining.858 And he will have failed who carries injustice.859
Waman ya'mal minas-sālihāti wahuwa mu'minun falā yakhāfu zulman walā hadmā
But he who does of righteous deeds while he is a believer - he will neither fear injustice nor deprivation.
Wakadhālika anzalnāhu qur'ānan 'arabiyyan wasarrafnā fīhi minal-wa'īdi la'allahum yattaqūna aw yuhdithu lahum dhikrā
And thus We have sent it down as an Arabic Qur’ān860 and have diversified therein the warnings that perhaps they will avoid [sin] or it would cause them remembrance.
Fata'ālallāhul-malikul-haqqu walā ta'jal bil-qur'āni min qabli an yuqdā ilayka wahyuhū waqur rabbi zidnī 'ilmā
So high [above all] is Allāh, the Sovereign,861 the Truth.862 And, [O Muḥammad], do not hasten with [recitation of] the Qur’ān before its revelation is completed to you, and say, "My Lord, increase me in knowledge."
Walaqad 'ahidnā ilā ādama min qablu fanasiya walam najid lahū 'azmā
And We had already taken a promise from Adam before, but he forgot; and We found not in him determination.863
Wa idh qulnā lil-malā'ikatisjudū li'ādama fasajadū illā iblīsa abā
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they prostrated, except Iblees;864 he refused.
Faqulnā yā'ādamu inna hādhā 'aduwwul laka walizawjika falā yukhrijannakumā minal-jannati fatashqā
So We said, "O Adam, indeed this is an enemy to you and to your wife. Then let him not remove you from Paradise so you would suffer.
Inna laka allā tajū'a fīhā walā ta'rā
Indeed, it is [promised] for you not to be hungry therein or be unclothed.
Wa annaka lā tazma'u fīhā walā tadhā
And indeed, you will not be thirsty therein or be hot from the sun."
Fawaswasa ilayhish-shaytānu qāla yā'ādamu hal adulluka 'alā shajaratil-khuldi wamulkil lā yablā
Then Satan whispered to him; he said, "O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of eternity and possession that will not deteriorate?"
Fa akalā minhā fabadat lahumā saw'ātuhumā watafiqā yakhsifāni 'alayhimā min waraqil-jannati wa'asā ādamu rabbahū faghawā
And they [i.e., Adam and his wife] ate of it, and their private parts became apparent to them, and they began to fasten over themselves from the leaves of Paradise. And Adam disobeyed his Lord and erred.
Thummajtabāhu rabbuhū fatāba 'alayhi wahadā
Then his Lord chose him and turned to him in forgiveness and guided [him].
Qālahbitā minhā jamī'ā ba'dukum liba'din 'aduwwun fa immā ya'tiyannakum minnī hudan famanit-taba'a hudāya falā yadillu walā yashqā
[Allāh] said, "Descend from it [i.e., Paradise] - all, [your descendants] being enemies to one another. And if there should come to you guidance from Me - then whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray [in the world] nor suffer [in the Hereafter].
Waman a'rada 'an dhikrī fa inna lahū ma'īshatan dankan wanahshuruhū yawmal-qiyāmati a'mā
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed [i.e., difficult] life, and We will gather [i.e., raise] him on the Day of Resurrection blind."
Qāla rabbi lima hashartanī a'mā waqad kuntu basīrā
He will say, "My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?"
Qāla kadhālika atatka āyātunā fanasītahā wakadhālikal-yawma tunsā
[Allāh] will say, "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot [i.e., disregarded] them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten."
Wakadhālika najzī man asrafa walam yu'mim bi'āyāti rabbihī wala'adhābul-ākhirati ashaddu wa abqā
And thus do We recompense he who transgressed and did not believe in the signs of his Lord. And the punishment of the Hereafter is more severe and more enduring.865
Afalam yahdi lahum kam ahlaknā qablahum minal-qurūni yamshūna fī masākinihim inna fī dhālika la'āyātil li ulin-nuhā
Then, has it not become clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them as they walk among their dwellings? Indeed in that are signs for those of intelligence.
Walawlā kalimatun sabaqat mir rabbika lakāna lizāman wa ajalum musammā
And if not for a word866 that preceded from your Lord, it [i.e., punishment] would have been an obligation [due immediately],867 and [if not for] a specified term [decreed].
Fasbir 'alā mā yaqūlūna wasabbih bihamdi rabbika qabla tulū'ish-shamsi waqabla ghurūbihā wamin ānāy'il-layli fasabbih wa atrāfan-nahāri la'allaka tardā
So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allāh] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [exalt Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied.
Walā tamuddanna 'aynayka ilā mā matta'nā bihī azwājam minhum zahratal-hayawātid-dunyā linaftinahum fīhi warizqu rabbika khayrun wa abqā
And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to [some] categories of them, [its being but] the splendor of worldly life by which We test them. And the provision of your Lord is better and more enduring.
Wa mur ahlaka bis-salawāti wastabir 'alayhā lā nas'aluka rizqan nahnu narzuquka wal-'āqibatu lit-taqwā
And enjoin prayer upon your family [and people] and be steadfast therein. We ask you not for provision; We provide for you, and the [best] outcome is for [those of] righteousness.
Waqālū lawlā ya'tīnā bi'āyatim mir rabbihī awalam ta'tihim bayyinatu mā fis-suhufil-ūlā
And they say, "Why does he not bring us a sign from his Lord?" Has there not come to them evidence of what was in the former scriptures?868
Walaw annā ahlaknāhum bi'adhābim min qablihī laqālū rabbanā lawlā arsalta ilaynā rasūlan fanattabi'a āyātika min qabli an nadhilla wanakhzā
And if We had destroyed them with a punishment before him,869 they would have said, "Our Lord, why did You not send to us a messenger so we could have followed Your verses [i.e., teachings] before we were humiliated and disgraced?"
Qul kullum mutarabbisun fatarabbasū fasata'lamūna man ashābus-sirātis-sawiyyi wamanihtadā
Say, "Each [of us] is waiting;870 so wait. For you will know who are the companions of the sound path and who is guided."
Juz 16 starts at Surah Al-Kahf 18:75 and ends at Surah Taha 20:135.
Juz 16 contains Al-Kahf, Maryam, Taha.
A juz (para) is one of 30 parts of equal length. Reading one a day completes the Quran in a month.
