Surah Al-Muddaththir المدثر

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُدَّثِّرُ ١

Yā'ayyuhal-muddatthir

O you who covers himself [with a garment],¹⁷⁸⁸

قُمۡ فَأَنذِرۡ ٢

Qum fa andhir

Arise and warn

وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرۡ ٣

Warabbaka fakabbir

And your Lord glorify

وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرۡ ٤

Wathiyābaka fatahhir

And your clothing purify

وَٱلرُّجۡزَ فَٱهۡجُرۡ ٥

War-rujza fahjur

And uncleanliness¹⁷⁸⁹ avoid

وَلَا تَمۡنُن تَسۡتَكۡثِرُ ٦

Walā tamnun tastakthir

And do not confer favor to acquire more¹⁷⁹⁰

وَلِرَبِّكَ فَٱصۡبِرۡ ٧

Walirabbika fasbir

But for your Lord be patient.

فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي ٱلنَّاقُورِ ٨

Fa idhā nuqira fin-nāqūr

And when the trumpet is blown,

فَذَٰلِكَ يَوۡمَئِذٖ يَوۡمٌ عَسِيرٌ ٩

Fadhālika yawma'idhin yawmun 'asīr

That Day will be a difficult day

عَلَى ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ غَيۡرُ يَسِيرٖ ١٠

'Alal-kāfirīna ghayru yasīr

For the disbelievers - not easy.

ذَرۡنِي وَمَنۡ خَلَقۡتُ وَحِيدٗا ١١

Dharnī waman khalaqtu wahīdā

Leave Me with the one I created alone¹⁷⁹¹

وَجَعَلۡتُ لَهُۥ مَالٗا مَّمۡدُودٗا ١٢

Waja'altu lahū mālam mamdūdā

And to whom I granted extensive wealth

وَبَنِينَ شُهُودٗا ١٣

Wabanīna shuhūdā

And children present [with him]

وَمَهَّدتُّ لَهُۥ تَمۡهِيدٗا ١٤

Wamahhattu lahū tamhīdā

And spread [everything] before him, easing [his life].

ثُمَّ يَطۡمَعُ أَنۡ أَزِيدَ ١٥

Thumma yatma'u an azīd

Then he desires that I should add more.

كَلَّآۖ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ لِأٓيَٰتِنَا عَنِيدٗا ١٦

Kallā innahū kāna li'āyātinā 'anīdā

No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

سَأُرۡهِقُهُۥ صَعُودًا ١٧

Sa'urhiquhū sa'ūdā

I will cover him with arduous torment.

إِنَّهُۥ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ ١٨

Innahū fakkara waqaddar

Indeed, he thought and deliberated.¹⁷⁹²

فَقُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ ١٩

Faqutila kayfa qaddar

So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيۡفَ قَدَّرَ ٢٠

Thumma qutila kayfa qaddar

Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated.

ثُمَّ نَظَرَ ٢١

Thumma nazar

Then he considered [again];

ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ ٢٢

Thumma 'abasa wabasar

Then he frowned and scowled;

ثُمَّ أَدۡبَرَ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرَ ٢٣

Thumma adbara wastakbar

Then he turned back and was arrogant

فَقَالَ إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحۡرٞ يُؤۡثَرُ ٢٤

Faqāla in hādhā illā sihrun yu'thar

And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others].

إِنۡ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا قَوۡلُ ٱلۡبَشَرِ ٢٥

In hādhā illā qawlul-bashar

This is not but the word of a human being."

سَأُصۡلِيهِ سَقَرَ ٢٦

Sa'uslīhi saqar

I will drive him into Saqar.¹⁷⁹³

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا سَقَرُ ٢٧

Wamā adrāka mā saqar

And what can make you know what is Saqar?

لَا تُبۡقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ ٢٨

Lā tubqī walā tadhar

It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned],

لَوَّاحَةٞ لِّلۡبَشَرِ ٢٩

Lawwāhatul lil-bashar

Altering [i.e., blackening] the skins.

عَلَيۡهَا تِسۡعَةَ عَشَرَ ٣٠

'Alayhā tis'ata 'ashar

Over it are nineteen [angels].

وَمَا جَعَلۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلنَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَٰٓئِكَةٗۖ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا عِدَّتَهُمۡ إِلَّا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لِيَسۡتَيۡقِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَيَزۡدَادَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِيمَٰنٗا وَلَا يَرۡتَابَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَلِيَقُولَ ٱلَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٞ وَٱلۡكَٰفِرُونَ مَاذَآ أَرَادَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلٗاۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُۚ وَمَا يَعۡلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكۡرَىٰ لِلۡبَشَرِ ٣١

Wamā ja'alnā ashāban-nāri illā malā'ikatan wamā ja'alnā 'iddatahum illā fitnatal lilladhīna kafarū liyastayqinal-ladhīna ūtul-kitāba wayazdādal-ladhīna āmanū īmānan walā yartābal-ladhīna ūtul-kitāba wal-mu'minūna waliyaqūlal-ladhīna fī qulūbihim maradun wal-kāfirūna mādhā arādallāhu bihādhā mathalan kadhālika yudillullāhu man yashā'u wayahdī man yashā'u wamā ya'lamu junūda rabbika illā huwa wamā hiya illā dhikrā lil-bashar

And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease [i.e., hypocrisy] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it [i.e., mention of the Fire] is not but a reminder to humanity.

كَلَّا وَٱلۡقَمَرِ ٣٢

Kallā wal-qamar

No! By the moon

وَٱلَّيۡلِ إِذۡ أَدۡبَرَ ٣٣

Wallayli idh adbar

And [by] the night when it departs

وَٱلصُّبۡحِ إِذَآ أَسۡفَرَ ٣٤

Was-subhi idhā asfar

And [by] the morning when it brightens,

إِنَّهَا لَإِحۡدَى ٱلۡكُبَرِ ٣٥

Innahā la ihdal-kubar

Indeed, it [i.e., the Fire] is of the greatest [afflictions]

نَذِيرٗا لِّلۡبَشَرِ ٣٦

Nadhīral lil-bashar

As a warning to humanity -

لِمَن شَآءَ مِنكُمۡ أَن يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوۡ يَتَأَخَّرَ ٣٧

Liman shā'a minkum an yataqaddama aw yata'akkhar

To whoever wills among you to proceed¹⁷⁹⁴ or stay behind.

كُلُّ نَفۡسِۭ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ رَهِينَةٌ ٣٨

Kullu nafsi bimā kasabat rahīnah

Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained¹⁷⁹⁵

إِلَّآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡيَمِينِ ٣٩

Illā ashābal-yamīn

Except the companions of the right,¹⁷⁹⁶.

فِي جَنَّٰتٖ يَتَسَآءَلُونَ ٤٠

Fī jannātin yatasā'alūn

[Who will be] in gardens, questioning each other

عَنِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ ٤١

'Anil-mujrimīn

About the criminals,

مَا سَلَكَكُمۡ فِي سَقَرَ ٤٢

Mā salakakum fī saqar

[And asking them], "What put you into Saqar?"

قَالُواْ لَمۡ نَكُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُصَلِّينَ ٤٣

Qālū lam naku minal-musallīn

They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

وَلَمۡ نَكُ نُطۡعِمُ ٱلۡمِسۡكِينَ ٤٤

Walam naku nut'imul-miskīn

Nor did we used to feed the poor.

وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ ٱلۡخَآئِضِينَ ٤٥

Wakunnā nakhūdu ma'al-khā'idīn

And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged [in it],

وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوۡمِ ٱلدِّينِ ٤٦

Wakunnā nukaddhibu biyawmid-dīn

And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

حَتَّىٰٓ أَتَىٰنَا ٱلۡيَقِينُ ٤٧

Hattā atānal-yaqīn

Until there came to us the certainty [i.e., death]."

فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمۡ شَفَٰعَةُ ٱلشَّٰفِعِينَ ٤٨

Famā tanfa'uhum shafā'atush-shāfi'īn

So there will not benefit them the intercession of [any] intercessors.

فَمَا لَهُمۡ عَنِ ٱلتَّذۡكِرَةِ مُعۡرِضِينَ ٤٩

Famā lahum 'anit-tadhkirati mu'ridīn

Then what is [the matter] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away

كَأَنَّهُمۡ حُمُرٞ مُّسۡتَنفِرَةٞ ٥٠

Ka annahum humurum mustanfirah

As if they were alarmed donkeys

فَرَّتۡ مِن قَسۡوَرَةِۭ ٥١

Farrat min qaswarah

Fleeing from a lion?

بَلۡ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُمۡ أَن يُؤۡتَىٰ صُحُفٗا مُّنَشَّرَةٗ ٥٢

Bal yurīdu kullumriy'im minhum an yu'tā suhufam munassharah

Rather, every person among them desires that he¹⁷⁹⁷ would be given scriptures spread about.¹⁷⁹⁸

كَلَّاۖ بَل لَّا يَخَافُونَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةَ ٥٣

Kallā bal lā yakhāfūnal-ākhirah

No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

كَلَّآ إِنَّهُۥ تَذۡكِرَةٞ ٥٤

Kallā innahū tadhkirah

No! Indeed, it [i.e., the Qur’ān] is a reminder

فَمَن شَآءَ ذَكَرَهُۥ ٥٥

Faman shā'a dhakarah

Then whoever wills will remember it.

وَمَا يَذۡكُرُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُۚ هُوَ أَهۡلُ ٱلتَّقۡوَىٰ وَأَهۡلُ ٱلۡمَغۡفِرَةِ ٥٦

Wamā yadhkurūna illā an yashā'allāhu huwa ahlut-taqwā wa ahlul-maghfirah

And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for [granting] forgiveness.
