Alif Lām Rā kitābun anzalnāhu ilayka litukhrijan-nāsa minaz-zulumāti ilan-nūri bi idhni rabbihim ilā sirātil-'azīzil-hamīd

Alif, Lām, Rā.648 [This is] a Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], that you might bring mankind out of darknesses into the light by permission of their Lord - to the path of the Exalted in Might, the Praiseworthy -

Allāhil-ladhī lahū mā fis-samāwāti wamā fil-ardi wawaylul lil-kāfirīna min 'adhābin shadīd

Allāh, to whom belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. And woe [i.e., destruction] to the disbelievers from a severe punishment -

Alladhīna yastahibbūnal-hayawātad-dunyā 'alal-ākhirati wayasuddūna 'an sabīlillāhi wayabghūnahā 'iwajan ulā'ika fī dalāli ba'īd

The ones who prefer the worldly life over the Hereafter and avert [people] from the way of Allāh, seeking to make it [seem] deviant. Those are in extreme error.

Wamā arsalnā mir rasūlin illā bilisāni qawmihī liyubayyina lahum fayudillullāhu man yashā'u wayahdī man yashā'u wahuwal-'azīzul-hakīm

And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allāh sends astray [thereby] whom He wills649 and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Walaqad arsalnā mūsā bi'āyātinā an akhrij qawmaka minaz-zulumāti ilan-nūri wadhakkirhum bi ayyāmillāhi inna fī dhālika la'āyātil likulli sabbārin shakūr

And We certainly sent Moses with Our signs, [saying], "Bring out your people from darknesses into the light and remind them of the days650 of Allāh." Indeed in that are signs for everyone patient and grateful.

Wa idh qāla mūsā liqawmihidhkurū ni'matallāhi 'alaykum idh anjākum min āli fir'awna yasūmūnakum sū'al-'adhābi wayudhabbihūna abnā'akum wayastahyūna nisā'akum wafī dhālikum balā'um mir rabbikum 'azīm

And [recall, O Children of Israel], when Moses said to his people, "Remember the favor of Allāh upon you when He saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were afflicting you with the worst torment and were slaughtering your [newborn] sons and keeping your females alive. And in that was a great trial from your Lord.

Wa idh ta'addhana rabbukum la in shakartum la azīdannakum wala'in kafartum inna 'adhābī lashadīd

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'"

Waqāla mūsā in takfurū antum waman fil-ardi jamī'an fa innallāha laghaniyyun hamīd

And Moses said, "If you should disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely - indeed, Allāh is Free of need and Praiseworthy."

Alam ya'tikum naba'ul-ladhīna min qablikum qawmi nūhin wa'ādin wathamūda walladhīna mim ba'dihim lā ya'lamuhum illallāhu jā'athum rusuluhum bil-bayyināti faraddū aydiyahum fī afwāhihim waqālū innā kafarnā bimā ursiltum bihī wa innā lafī shakkim mimmā tad'ūnanā ilayhi murīb

Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them? No one knows them [i.e., their number] but Allāh. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths651 and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

Qālat rusuluhum afillāhi shakkun fātiris-samāwāti wal-ardi yad'ūkum liyaghfira lakum min dhunūbikum wayu'akkhirakum ilā ajalim musamman qālū in antum illā basharum mithlunā turīdūna an tasuddūnā 'ammā kāna ya'budu ābā'unā fa tūnā bisultānim mubīn

Their messengers said, "Can there be doubt about Allāh, Creator of the heavens and earth? He invites you that He may forgive you of your sins, and He delays you [i.e., your death] for a specified term." They said, "You are not but men like us who wish to avert us from what our fathers were worshipping. So bring us a clear authority [i.e., evidence]."

Qālat lahum rusuluhum in nahnu illā basharum mithlukum walākinnallāha yamunnu 'alā man yashā'u min 'ibādihī wamā kāna lanā an na'tiyakum bisultānin illā bi idhnillāhi wa'alallāhi falyatawakkalil-mu'minūn

Their messengers said to them, "We are only men like you, but Allāh confers favor upon whom He wills of His servants. It has never been for us to bring you evidence except by permission of Allāh. And upon Allāh let the believers rely.

Wamā lanā allā natawakkala 'alallāhi waqad hadānā subulanā walanasbiranna 'alā mā ādhaytumūnā wa'alallāhi falyatawakkalil-mutawakkilūn

And why should we not rely upon Allāh while He has guided us to our [good] ways. And we will surely be patient against whatever harm you should cause us. And upon Allāh let those who would rely [indeed] rely."

Waqālal-ladhīna kafarū lirusulihim lanukhrijannakum min ardinā aw lata'ūdunna fī millatinā fa awhā ilayhim rabbuhum lanuhlikannaz-zālimīn

And those who disbelieved said to their messengers, "We will surely drive you out of our land, or you must return to our religion." So their Lord inspired to them, "We will surely destroy the wrongdoers.

Walanuskinannakumul-arda mim ba'dihim dhālika liman khāfa maqāmī wakhāfa wa'īd

And We will surely cause you to dwell in the land after them. That is for he who fears My position652 and fears My threat."

Wastaftahū wakhāba kullu jabbārin 'anīd

And they requested decision [i.e., victory from Allāh], and disappointed, [therefore], was every obstinate tyrant.

Mmin warā'ihī jahannamu wayusqā mim mā'in sadīd

Before him653 is Hell, and he will be given a drink of purulent water.654

Yatajarra'uhū walā yakādu yusīghuhū waya'tīhil-mawtu min kulli makānin wamā huwa bimayyitin wamin warā'ihī 'adhābun ghalīz

He will gulp it but will hardly [be able to] swallow it. And death will come to him from everywhere, but he is not to die. And before him is a massive punishment.

Mmathalul-ladhīna kafarū birabbihim a'māluhum karamādinishtaddat bihir-rīhu fī yawmin 'āsifil lā yaqdirūna mimmā kasabū 'alā shay'in dhālika huwad-dalālul-ba'īd

The example of those who disbelieve in their Lord is [that] their deeds are like ashes which the wind blows forcefully on a stormy day; they are unable [to keep] from what they earned a [single] thing. That is what is extreme error.

Alam tara annallāha khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arda bil-haqqi in yasha' yudhhibkum waya'ti bikhalqin jadīd

Have you not seen [i.e., considered] that Allāh created the heavens and the earth in truth? If He wills, He can do away with you and produce a new creation.

Wamā dhālika 'alallāhi bi'azīz

And that is not difficult for Allāh.

Wabarazū lillāhi jamī'an faqālad-du'afā'u lilladhīnastakbarū innā kunnā lakum taba'an fahal antum mughnūna 'annā min 'adhābillāhi min shay'in qālū law hadānallāhu lahadaynākum sawā'un 'alaynā ajazi'nā am sabarnā mā lanā mim mahīs

And they will come out [for judgement] before Allāh all together, and the weak will say to those who were arrogant, "Indeed, we were your followers, so can you avail us anything against the punishment of Allāh?" They will say, "If Allāh had guided us, we would have guided you. It is all the same for us whether we show intolerance or are patient: there is for us no place of escape."

Waqālash-shaytānu lammā qudiyal-amru innallāha wa'adakum wa'dal-haqqi wawa'attukum fa akhlaftukum wamā kāna liya 'alaykum min sultānin illā an da'awtukum fastajabtum lī falā talūmūnī walūmū anfusakum mā ana bimusrikhikum wamā antum bimusrikhiyya innī kafartu bimā ashraktumūni min qablu innaz-zālimīna lahum 'adhābun alīm

And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allāh had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allāh] before.655 Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."

Wa udkhilal-ladhīna āmanū wa'amilus-sālihāti jannātin tajrī min tahtihal-anhāru khālidīna fīhā bi idhni rabbihim tahiyyatuhum fīhā salām

And those who believed and did righteous deeds will be admitted to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding eternally therein by permission of their Lord; and their greeting therein will be, "Peace!"

Alam tara kayfa daraballāhu mathalan kalimatan tayyibatan kashajaratin tayyibatin asluhā thābitun wafar'uhā fis-samā'

Have you not considered how Allāh presents an example, [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?

Tu'tī ukulahā kulla hīni bi idhni rabbihā wayadribullāhul-amthāla lin-nāsi la'allahum yatadhakkarūn

It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. And Allāh presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded.

Wamathalu kalimatin khabīthatin kashajaratin khabīthatinijtutthat min fawqil-ardi mā lahā min qarār

And the example of a bad word is like a bad tree, uprooted from the surface of the earth, not having any stability.

Yuthabbitullāhul-ladhīna āmanū bil-qawlith-thābiti fil-hayawātid-dunyā wafil-ākhirati wayudillullāhuz-zālimīna wayaf'alullāhu mā yashā'

Allāh keeps firm those who believe, with the firm word,656 in worldly life and in the Hereafter.657 And Allāh sends astray the wrongdoers. And Allāh does what He wills.

Have you not considered those who exchanged the favor of Allāh for disbelief658 and settled their people [in] the home of ruin?

Jahannama yaslawnahā wabi'sal-qarār

[It is] Hell, which they will [enter to] burn, and wretched is the settlement.

Waja'alū lillāhi andādal liyudillū 'an sabīlihī qul tamatta'ū fa inna masīrakum ilan-nār

And they have attributed to Allāh equals to mislead [people] from His way. Say, "Enjoy yourselves, for indeed, your destination is the Fire."

Qul li'ibādiyal-ladhīna āmanū yuqīmus-salawāta wayunfiqū mimmā razaqnāhum sirran wa'alāniyatam min qabli an ya'tiya yawmul lā bay'un fīhi walā khilāl

[O Muḥammad], tell My servants who have believed to establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them, secretly and publicly, before a Day comes in which there will be no exchange [i.e., ransom], nor any friendships.

Allāhul-ladhī khalaqas-samāwāti wal-arda wa anzala minas-samā'i mā'an fa akhraja bihī minath-thamarāti rizqal lakum wasakkhara lakumul-fulka litajriya fil-bahri bi amrihī wasakkhara lakumul-anhār

It is Allāh who created the heavens and the earth and sent down rain from the sky and produced thereby some fruits as provision for you and subjected for you659 the ships to sail through the sea by His command and subjected for you the rivers.

Wasakkhara lakumush-shamsa wal-qamara dā'ibayni wasakkhara lakumul-layla wan-nahār

And He subjected for you the sun and the moon, continuous [in orbit], and subjected for you the night and the day.

And He gave you from all you asked of Him.660 And if you should count the favor [i.e., blessings] of Allāh, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.661

Wa idh qāla ibrāhīmu rabbij'al hādhal-balada āminan wajnubnī wabaniyya an na'budal-asnām

And [mention, O Muḥammad], when Abraham said, "My Lord, make this city [i.e., Makkah] secure and keep me and my sons away from worshipping idols.

Rabbi innahunna adlalna kathīram minan-nāsi faman tabi'anī fa innahū minnī waman 'asānī fa innaka ghafūrur rahīm

My Lord, indeed they have led astray many among the people. So whoever follows me - then he is of me;662 and whoever disobeys me - indeed, You are [yet] Forgiving and Merciful.

Rrabbanā innī askantu min dhurriyyatī biwādin ghayri dhī zar'in 'inda baytikal-muharrami rabbanā liyuqīmus-salawāta faj'al af'idatam minan-nāsi tahwī ilayhim warzuqhum minath-thamarāti la'allahum yashkurūn

Our Lord, I have settled some of my descendants in an uncultivated valley near Your sacred House, our Lord, that they may establish prayer. So make hearts among the people incline toward them and provide for them from the fruits that they might be grateful.

Rabbanā innaka ta'lamu mā nukhfī wamā nu'linu wamā yakhfā 'alallāhi min shay'in fil-ardi walā fis-samā'

Our Lord, indeed You know what we conceal and what we declare, and nothing is hidden from Allāh on the earth or in the heaven.

Al-hamdu lillāhil-ladhī wahaba lī 'alal-kibari ismā'īla wa ishāqa inna rabbī lasamī'ud-du'ā'

Praise to Allāh, who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.

Rabbij'alnī muqīmas-salawāti wamin dhurriyyatī rabbanā wataqabbal du'ā'

My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.

Rabbanaghfir lī waliwālidayya walil-mu'minīna yawma yaqūmul-hisāb

Our Lord, forgive me and my parents and the believers the Day the account is established."

Walā tahsabannallāha ghāfilan 'ammā ya'maluz-zālimūna innamā yu'akkhiruhum liyawmin tashkhasu fīhil-absār

And never think that Allāh is unaware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays them [i.e., their account] for a Day when eyes will stare [in horror].

Muhti'īna muqni'ī ru'ūsihim lā yartaddu ilayhim tarfuhum wa af'idatuhum hawā'

Racing ahead, their heads raised up, their glance does not come back to them,663 and their hearts are void.

Wa andhirin-nāsa yawma ya'tīhimul-'adhābu fayaqūlul-ladhīna zalamū rabbanā akkhirnā ilā ajalin qarībin nujib da'wataka wanattabi'ir-rusula awalam takūnū aqsamtum min qablu mā lakum min zawāl

And, [O Muḥammad], warn the people of a Day when the punishment will come to them and those who did wrong will say, "Our Lord, delay us for a short term; we will answer Your call and follow the messengers." [But it will be said], "Had you not sworn, before, that for you there would be no cessation?664

Wasakantum fī masākinil-ladhīna zalamū anfusahum watabayyana lakum kayfa fa'alnā bihim wadarabnā lakumul-amthāl

And you lived among the dwellings of those who wronged themselves, and it had become clear to you how We dealt with them. And We presented for you [many] examples."

Waqad makarū makrahum wa'indallāhi makruhum wa in kāna makruhum litazūla minhul-jibāl

And they had planned their plan, but with Allāh is [recorded] their plan, even if their plan had been [sufficient] to do away with the mountains.665

Falā tahsabannallāha mukhlifa wa'dihī rusulahū innallāha 'azīzun dhuntiqām

So never think that Allāh will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.666

Yawma tubaddalul-ardu ghayral-ardi was-samāwātu wabarazū lillāhil-wāhidil-qahhār

[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and they [i.e., all creatures] will come out before Allāh, the One, the Prevailing,

Wataral-mujrimīna yawma'idhim muqarranīna fil-asfād

And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in irons,

Sarābīluhum min qatirānin wataghshā wujūhahumun-nār

Their garments of liquid pitch and their faces covered by the Fire

Liyajziyallāhu kulla nafsim mā kasabat innallāha sarī'ul-hisāb

So that Allāh will recompense every soul for what it earned. Indeed, Allāh is swift in account.

Hādhā balāghul lin-nāsi waliyundharū bihī waliya'lamū annamā huwa ilāhun wāhidun waliyaddhakkara ulul-albāb

This [Qur’ān] is notification for the people that they may be warned thereby and that they may know that He is but one God and that those of understanding will be reminded.
