Eid al-Adha 2026
Expected date
Wednesday, 27 May 2026
10 Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH
Until Saturday, 30 May 2026
Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia. Where the month begins with the local sighting of the new moon, the date can be one day earlier or later.
Eid al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice, is the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Muslims pray the Eid prayer and then sacrifice an animal, following Prophet Ibrahim. The three days after it are the Days of Tashreeq.
From the Quran and Sunnah
- Pray the Eid prayer first, and eat after it. (At-Tirmidhi)
- Sacrifice after the prayer, not before it. (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)
- Whoever will sacrifice does not cut hair or nails from the start of Dhu al-Hijjah until the sacrifice. (Muslim)
- The Days of Tashreeq after Eid are days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah. (Muslim)
Hadith
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed two black and white horned rams, which he slaughtered with his hand, as he mentioned Allah's name and said: "Allāhu Akbar" (Allah is the Most Great), and put his foot on their necks.
Explanation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) slaughtered, with his hand on the day of Eid al-Ad'ha, two male sheep with white horns mixed with black, and said: Bismillāh (in the name of Allah) and Allāhu Akbar; and he placed his foot on their necks.
’Umm Salamah, Mother of the Believers and wife of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has a sacrifice to slaughter, once the crescent of Dhul-Hijjah is declared, he should not take anything from his hair or his nails until he sacrifices."
Explanation
The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) commanded those who intend to offer a sacrifice not to cut hair from their head, armpits, or mustache, nor to cut any of their fingernails or toenails until they have offered their sacrifice, once the new moon of Dhul-Hijjah has appeared.
